Never Split The Difference

The New Rules How to Become the Smartest Person…in Any Room Negotiators must be active listeners in order to gain the trust of the other party. Mirroring The late-night FM DJ voice: Basically, keep it calm and slow. Use this selectively to make a point. When done properly, the late-night FM DJ voice has the power to create an aura of authority and trust without making the other party defensive. The playful/positive voice: This should be your default voice. It’s the voice of an easygoing, good-natured person. Your attitude is light and encouraging. The direct/assertive voice: This should be used as rarely as possible because this has the potential to create pushback. Mirroring works magic. Repeat the last three words (or the critical one to three words) of what someone has just said because we fear what is different and find comfort in similarity. Using mirroring encourages the other party to empathize and bond with you, keep people talking, buy your party some time, and eventually reve...

Here's the thing about this Recession

Image
Here’s the thing about this recession. Well, several things, actually. I don’t know how long it will last. I don’t know what the bottom price is going to be. I don’t know what the price action will look like on the way down, or on the way back up I believe it will recover and go up So from my perspective, the best decision I can make is to go long, keep buying all the way down, buy the bottom, buy on the way back up, come out ahead, have no regrets about my decision making along the way (because I didn’t jump in and out at the worst times trying to guess the bottom or price action patterns) Your original question  (Whatcha think about stocks? Continues up or temporary?)  reminded me about the stress I don’t have to deal with, in trying to  decide  what to do. Here’s my perspective on the difference. I’ll call this System 1 and System 2. Market is doing well System 1 keeps buying System 2 keeps buying Market starts to fall System 1 keeps buying System 2 has to ...

Finding your Real Win Rate with Binomials and Exa Score

Image
This article will provide a brief and simple introduction to using Binomial Proportion Confidence Intervals in your trading system so that you don’t fool yourself with false positive results. STATISTICS, EXPLAINED BY PLAYING CARDS image 1600×1030 81 KB Imagine I present you with a pack of playing cards, and I shuffle them up. The game is to have you draw a card, and if it’s black, you win $1, if it’s red, you lose $1.50. You draw 5 cards off the top of the shuffled deck. Four came out black, one came out red. You celebrate with your friends about your  80% WIN RATE!!! You did the math, and know that with a 1:1.5 Reward to Risk with an 80% win rate is fantastic. A money printer! With these statistics, across 100 games (or trades) you’ll have an average total gain of $80, and an average total loss of $30. This is great news, a winning system!!! But, just hold on a minute here. That 80% win rate is only the results you got after 5 trades (or card draws). How reliable is that da...

The Trend is your Friend Analogy

Image
Imagine your friend Bob is throwing a big party this weekend and it sounds like it’s going to be a good one. The trend is movement. The trend is whether or not people are going to the party… not necessarily the quality of the party itself. One more time; THE TREND IS WHERE PEOPLE ARE GOING … not which is “better.” Numerous factors contribute to the “trend” for his party. It’s possible there’s going to be amazing food, lots of entertainment… and still not having anyone attend. Maybe it’s because the party is on a weeknight, there’s traffic, or another friend Sarah is also throwing a party at the same time. The trend is where people are going. For beginner investors Pretend you didn’t know Bob’s party is an outdoor party and it’s raining. “The trend is your friend” can shield you from making the mistake of not knowing or factoring these conditions into your decision because others that do know this information, will be using it in their decisions and going to Sarah’s party. The fact that...
